Casa Serin, an historic slate stone house of 100 m² (1075 sq ft), is an architectural renovation project, and has a garden of around 500 m² (5400 sq ft) and surrounding mature trees. With views along the whole valley, it sits amongst the fields high on the hillside by the village of Coaña, between the River Meiro and River Navia. It was rebuilt in the early XX Century with the original slate blocks from the previous house on the same site. The village of Coaña is famed for its literary Canel family, whose house still exists with their coat of arms on the main facade. Eva Canel was a poet in the late XIX Century.
The historic market town of Navia, only 5 kilometres away, has seen recent improvements, particularly along the riverfront, and is a town on the up. Navia is the main town for the wider area, with a weekly farmers market on Thursdays, and also has a small port and nearby beaches. There are shops, bars, restaurants, banks, health centre, public transport and school.
Coaña is less than 10 kilometres from the coast with its beautiful beaches and cliffs. There are plenty of places to find excellent seafood restaurants along the coast, including pretty seaside villages such as Puerto de Vega and Luarca.
Connections are also good for the wider area. Galicia, with its crisp Albariño white wine, is only half an hour (30 kilometres) to the West. The historic towns of Oviedo, Avilés and Gijón are an hour away, and Asturias (Avilés) airport less than an hour (70 kilometres).
Less than 100 kilometres to the South are natural parks and winemaking areas. In Cangas del Narcea there are the vineyards of the Corias Monastery, close to the impressive monastery itself, recently renovated as a Parador hotel. Lesser known are the protected natural parks of, Muniellos with its beautiful beech forests, spectacular in Autumn; and, Somiedo, where there are still wild bears, best seen in Spring when they are out in the open playing with the cubs.
Although this is a complete renovation project, the house has a certain charm with the solid slate block walls and intimate layout of the existing buildings. It is currently two storeys with a total of 80 m² internal area but with Architect’s drawings already done for a house of 115 m² internal area, although there is still plenty of flexibility and scope to personalise the design, including enlarge windows. There is also a small stone outhouse.
